Film Screening: The Poppaw Queen

  • Arts'tination 162 Waterfront Street Oxon Hill, MD, 20745 United States (map)

Don’t miss this inspiring evening of film, history, and conversation celebrating Black History Month.

Winner of the Best Documentary at the Prince George's Film Festival, The Poppaw Queen is a feature-length documentary that highlights one of Maryland's earliest African American families, the Queens. Mary “The Poppaw” Queen was the first ancestor of the Queen lineage who was illegally sold into slavery and never freed. This film will also showcase the descendants of the Queens, who later filed lawsuits against their enslavers to assert their claim to freedom and honor the GU272 - Jesuit Diaspora.

The film follows a descendant of the Queen Family, Malachi E. Robinson, as he discovers his family’s past and reveals new details about his ancestors’ historic fight for freedom.

Following the screening, join the filmmakers for an engaging discussion about the Poppaw Queen's role in shaping Black history.
