Creative Place Making

Placemaking projects present innovative solutions for local challenges; a place where art, culture, and design are at the heart of every community. The initiative is meant to amplify and uplift the community by creating new works, iconic installations, and rejuvenating landmarks of the residents' beloved city.

Art in Public Places was formed to provide meaningful opportunities for artists, to contribute to the development of art and culture in Prince George's County, and to visually enhance public settings for its citizens. The program also strives to further its mission through collaborations with other organizations and private sector construction in the County to facilitate the presence of public artwork in a greater variety of locations.

Public Art Projects In Progress

Bladensburg Branch Library

The original branch was dedicated on October 21, 1978, in a 1920’s-era building that had formerly been the Bladensburg Elementary School and then the Board of Education Media Center. It will be a 22,834 square-foot building – almost three times the size of the original building and feature an original sculpture and wall art installation for the newly constructed Bladensburg Branch Library.

The nautical motif will be carried throughout the remainder of the branch in a less literal interpretation through the selection of fixtures and finishes. In reference to the theme, the prow of a ship, which indicates the entrance to new children’s collection will captivate young patrons through its ‘Discovery Harbor’ theme. The reference sketch provided is depicting a water-themed "alebrije", a brightly colored Mexican folk-art sculpture.

Curtis Woody

Curtis' Biography

A mixed media collage painter, drawing inspiration from historical connection points that join together individuals, families, generations and communities. I create highly textured and intricately detailed original art pieces that are intended to breathe new life into and enhance the unique characteristics of a common historical heritage. Life is a circle and I take pleasure in salvaging the old to create something new, asking the viewer to recognize the past while appreciating the here and now. My paintings are research-based collages and layers which are fabricated in a variety of ways. I highlight impactful images and also play close attention to minute details. Some paintings start with hand cut museum board blocks that are painted, embellished, scratched and merged together. I used an assortment of found objects, old books, aged photographs, buttons, letters, vintage newspapers and rusty metal combined with an assortment of artistic mediums. The meaning of the attached elements often becomes clearer to me as they are assembled. The result is a continual search for balance between spontaneity and historical relevance. My richly layered work invites viewers to step in closer, explore details, and create or reflect on their own stories of connection. Because of the multi-layering it is my expectation that the paintings become thoughtful, spiritual, interesting and sensitive creations.
