"Out of the Vineyard (OOTV)," written by esteemed playwright Psalmayene 24, adapts William G. Thomas III's pivotal work, "A Question of Freedom: The Families Who Challenged Slavery from the Nation’s Founding to the Civil War," for the stage. Directed and choreographed by Tony Thomas, the play illuminates families, places, and stories that reveal quests for freedom against systemic racism. It examines the societal impact of slavery and prompts audiences to consider the implications of hidden historical truths critically. The play advocates for a just and equitable future.
Spanning over seven decades, enslaved families in Prince George’s County, Maryland—including the Butlers, Queens, Mahoneys, and Bells—engaged in a relentless legal battle for freedom, challenging slavery in court and reaching the Supreme Court.
