Gateway Artists and Stakeholders Discuss Property Purchasing

Organizers hoped to engage representatives from local government for questions about
permitting and municipal concerns.
Gateway Artists and Stakeholders discussed strategies for ownership while there properties are
available. The goal of the conversation was to bring together local resources and interested
parties, for information sharing and organizing.
Participants included:
– Jim Johnson, co-op activist/ organizer will share information on Co-Ops 101 (if you even
want a co-op, what kind of co-op, and steps to forming a co-op)
– Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts and Maryland Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts
will give a brief look at of applicable legal resources for artists.
– Brooke Kidd (Joe's), Margaret Boozer (Red Dirt), Pat Thornton (Gateway CDC), Barbara
Johnson/ Jeremy Flick (Art Works Now) will briefly share different strategies for
property ownership for their respective organizations.
 Peter Siegel will share some resources/insight from the development perspective.
 Kurt Becker, one of our local real estate agents, will share listings.

Future conversations could include local builders, lenders, real estate attorneys and more.
